TikTok is always introducing us to new things. Case in point, microlink extensions. They’ve amassed 23.2 million video views on the social media app so far. But why is everyone so obsessed with them? It comes down to how versatile they are. L.A.-based extension specialist Tori Elyse notes that microlinks are “flexible, hide easily, and can be worn in a variety of different styles such as ponytails, braids, etc.” She even boasts that they’re her personal favorite when it comes to the extensions she puts in her own hair.

Tori notes that they “are small individual pieces of hair that are installed around the head with a soft bead to achieve volume, fullness, or length.” Rather than tape or glue, they require a microbead to hold them in place. We know that sounds as though it wouldn’t be comfortable, but Tori and TikTok promise they are. And, by using these microbeads, they promise a better blend than some other extension types.

There are also different types of microlinks so they’re not a one-size-fits-all type of extension, meaning you can customize them to your hair type. “Depending on the hair brand that you go with, some microlink extensions are finer, some are thicker, some come in different wave patterns as well so they are very versatile,” says Tori.

As with most extension appointments, microlinks take some time to be installed. Tori shares that it takes her a maximum of two hours, though it can be longer depending on what you’re hoping to get out of your appointment. If you want more length and volume, expect to be in the salon for up to eight hours. Never fear, for the process is a pretty seamless one. “The process to getting microlinks is smooth and comfortable for my clients,” shares Tori. “Most say that they can’t even feel anything as I’m putting them in.”

Whether you want length, volume, or both, the application process is fairly similar. They’re attached section by section to loose strands of hair. Once the locks are pulled through the extensions, pliers are used to secure the beads in place. This is something you’ll want to go to a professional for to ensure a seamless install. Doing it yourself at home might not work out all that well for you.

If you’re hoping to get these extensions, do know that they aren’t cheap. Tori notes that “for a full set of microlink extensions, my prices range from $2500 to $3000.” They can cost more or less, depending on where you get them done, though the minimum price tag is roughly $1000. You’ll want to have plenty of change in your bank account before you get these extensions installed. You should also consult with your extensionist before you get them done to ensure there are no surprise fees waiting for you when all is said and done.

One of the great things about microlink extensions is that you can wash them as you would your normal hair. You do have to be a little bit careful to ensure they don’t tangle or fall out, but they’re fairly easy to wash. Tori recommends that “my clients blowdry their Microlink extensions at least once a week.” She also stresses the importance of focusing on hydration. “I always send [my clients] home with great products that will keep them hydrated,” she notes. “After all, hair extensions do not produce the natural oil that the hair on our scalp produces so you need to make sure that you are using the proper products to keep them moisturized.”

When it comes to sleeping in them, she suggests putting your hair “in a loose braid to keep all of the microlinks from getting tangled.” In doing so, you’ll wake up to luscious waves. Who wouldn’t want that?

As far as maintenance goes, Tori shares that she requires her clients “to come in for maintenance appointments to get the beads bumped up and switched out every six to eight weeks.” She does note that the actual hair she uses can last up to six months if cared for properly. She does, however, recommend getting a new set “two to three times a year.”

Again, all hair types can benefit from microlinks. Even those with type 4 hair have noted how well the extensions work for their coils. So don’t be afraid of getting these extensions attached to your natural hair type. They come in a variety of patterns to match your strands.

Tori says that “microlinks are pretty versatile and can be installed on clients with fine, medium, or thick hair.” However, she notes that those with super fine or thin hair may not benefit from the extensions. “If someone has extremely slippery fine or thin hair, I would steer them in a different direction as they may slip.”
